My name is Maria and today I am 18 years old. I have learned that my name is important, it is who I am and I am free and today. I have the right to vote. I am on my way to vote because being part of a democracy is important to me.
As I cross the road on my way to the polling station I decided to take the route through the gardens. I have always had a love of nature. I stop to smell the flowers and leave them growing as we need to look after nature. I observe the people around me looking down at their mobile phones while I gaze up at the wonderous trees and sky.
I cast my mind back to when I started loving nature and recall attending Forest School I my preschool. It was there that I also learned about my Rights. The right of education through education, my right to protection using the Peace table to resolve conflict through language. I learned to use my voice there and how powerful my voice can be. I learned I was born with these rights and no one can take them away from me. We practiced being in a democracy by voting for the things we wanted to do and accepted that in a democracy we have to accept that the biggest number gets it.
I remember at 2 years when I started there a feeling of being safe and loved in a lovingly extraordinarily prepared environment with a low number of children to high number of caring capable teachers who all made an impact on who I am today.
At 3 years I remember an abundant love of learning. I was full of wonder and awe and my teachers inspired me by fuelling the fire of my imagination.
At 5 years I remember I did not want to leave but I knew that my teachers, friends and I are connected with invisible strings made of love and wherever I am I can feel them with me. It was time to move on, but I am ready equipped with the best possible start to life and learning.
At 10 years I was diagnosed with dyslexia which is a different way of learning but that's alright as I have the same rights as everyone else regardless of my "disability". I learned that too at my preschool.
Today I am bubbling away with ideas, I start my University degree soon and am so excited as there is so much I want to do and achieve in life. I ponder my ideas. I know I have the power in me and no one can hold me back. Why do I know that? I remember from an early age, at my preschool my teachers taught me that I can do anything I put my mind to. They taught me independence and we sang the song, the power in me that still plays in my head today.
As I cross the road to the polling station, enter the booth, make my X and cast my vote, it hits me like a flash, something that I have known. Been taught from an early age... what do you do with an idea and the best start in life?... You change the world!
